Junior Cricket – “Bulldog Academy” & Western Spirit


First game off Western Spirit Carnival was played on Sunday 11/11/18 for the Spirit U16’s and Under 14’s team with both teams playing Barwon in Geelong

Under 16’s:

Spirit team Lost the toss and bowled in excellent conditions for batting

Spirit picked up the early wicket of Tom Scott who is in the Vic U17 team for 8 bowled by Blackman then watched a brilliant innings of 101 of 94 balls by Liam Blackford (both Scott and Blackford Play for Geelong) and at the 25 over break Barwon was 2/133 looking like they would make 250 plus score

The Spirit lads then regrouped at the 25 over’s drink break with a very good bowling performance restricting Barwon to 9/207 of their 50 over’s taking 6 wickets for 74 runs in the last 25 over’s

The bowling group with Lucas Blackman with 5 for 42 of 9 over’s , Max Birthisel (Vice Captain) 0/35 , Chris Jackson (Captain) 1/24 off 10 over’s , Varad Chaudhari 1/17 and Nafi Anaan 0/24 being the pick of the bowlers

Aidan Salvado (Vice Captain) took 3 catches and a stumping in an excellent performance as wicket keeper (Barwon Coaches were very impressed with Aidan’s glove work)

Spirit Team then went about chasing the target of 208 with an opening partnership off 36 between Nethum Athukorala 67 and Nicholas Markovski 10,  this was followed by a 50 partnership between Athukorala and Aidan Salvado 24 before Salvado was discussed with the score at 86 , Spirit lost 3 wickets for 0 at one stage being 4/86 with Athukorala and Max Birthisel 51 not out adding 42 for the 5th wicket before Athukorala being discussed with the score at 5/128 for a well complied 67

Spirit Team needed a partnership

This brought Captain Chris Jackson 41 not out  and Vice Captain Max Birthisel together in what was to be a wonderful batting display with an unbeaten partnership of 81 to get the Under 16’s team home with an over to spare

Spirit ended up 5/209 in a Great win and way to start the carnival

Very good all-round team performance with the next phase of the carnival to be held in Warrnambool in late December with 4 T20 games over 3 days

Under 14’s

Spirit Under 14’s lost the Toss and were sent in to Bat by Barwon , at the end of their Innings they made 6/167

Alexander Hatzoglou 7 and Harrison Jamieson  30 (Captain) had an opening partnership off 25 , with wickets falling on a regular basis with consistent partnerships during the innings

Ali Khan was best of the batsmen with 49 along with Yaseen Muntasir making a well complied 37 not out off 50 balls with the spirit lads confident they could defend the 167 score

Barwon started their run chase with an opening partnership of 109 with the Spirit lads not being able to make sufficient break throughs to put any pressure on the Barwon Team

The Spirit Bowling and  fielding was very consistent with Harrison Jamieson being the pick of the bowlers with 3/24 off 8 over’s along with Ali Kan 1/10 , Yaseen Muntasir 1/8

Arjun Sehrawat also bowling well with 0/26 off 7 over’s and Lachlan Fitzgerald 0/18 off 5 over’s

Barwon finished 6/194 at the end of the game with the Spirit lads to get back on track in the next phase of the carnival

Junior Development Work planned for 2018/19

Section 1.


FCC have 3 Blocks of Development Sessions throughout the Year for Invited players of approx 45 players from around the State at each training session


These sessions will be run by Specialist Coaching Team

Section 2.


Bulldog Cricket Academy set up to Develop Juniors in Western Region through the WRJCA Association/ FCC programs  ,  which incorporates the Spirit Pathway Program along with Clubs in the North West Region that live in Region 9 Area


U 14’s , U 16’s & U 18’s Player list is made up the following way


1/            WRJCA performances from the past season  as recorded in MyCricket.

2/            Players were required meet certain criteria to be considered (Runs/Wickets/Dismissals) in their age group

3/            All WRJCA clubs also has the opportunity to nominate suitable players.

4/            Region 9 based clubs that participate in the North West Cricket Association were also invited to nominate players.

5/            They have Involved Spirit Rep Teams U 14, U 16 & U 18’s or they are nominated by key people in the Region


U 14’s      looking at 3 Teams (Spirit & 2 VMCU Teams) Need 39 players plus 2 emergency’s

U 16’s      looking at 2 Teams (Spirit & 1 VMCU Team) Need 26 players plus 2 emergency’s

U 18’s      looking at 2 Teams (Spirit & 1 VMCU Team which is an Under 17 Team ) Need 26 players plus 2 emergency’s




1/            To have a well structured Program

2/            Age appropriate.

3/            Includes development opportunities for junior players in the region.




1/            Program that Continues the skill development of players.

2/            Improves players along with a specialist Coaching session for feed back to all players

3/            Allow players the understanding of the game of cricket.




1/            program that will  Prepare players to be fit and ready for the upcoming season.

2/            we  Identify suitable players to progress to trial for representative teams


Responsibilities & Expectations


1/            Respectful and courteous behaviour at all times.

2/            Players/Parents/Coaches we all have a responsibility to our Code of Behaviour (Nil Tolerance)




1/            We will have 4 Training sessions with back up day the U 14’s & U 16’s & 3 Sessions for U18’s , which all players are expected to attend

2/            We will then Cut the Squads to 48 players to cover off 2 trial Matches where coaches will assess players under match conditions.

3/            Final squads will be selected at the conclusion of the practice matches of which the Spirit U 14 , U16 & U 18 Squads of 15 will be picked (13 players & 2 Emergencies for U14 & U18 , U16 will look at 15 due to new format)

4/            Coaches of each team will hold individual training sessions leading into respective carnivals / championships.

5/            You will also be trialling for the VMCU Teams which is 2 x U14, 1 U16 Team & 1 x U18 Team which will be made up of many U17 Players

6/            Some lads will go back to the North West Teams for their VMCU trials , which we will advise the Regional people who they are


The Carnival is also trials for Vic Try outs of which last season we had 7 Players play in Victorian Rep teams at Under 19 , Under 17,  Under 15 & Under 12


FCC have the most Test Caps since late 50’s from one Club in Australia along with being the awarded the Best Premier Club in Australia the past two years
